Your words are like music to my ears – Project idea

I’m working on an idea: take the human voice, convert it into MIDI notes, synthesise the frequencies, and—voilà—your words become music. At least, that’s the theory.

At the heart of this project is an oversized, organic-looking megaphone. The narrow end represents an ear, inviting visitors to speak or whisper into it. Their words are then transformed into musical harmonies, amplified by the funnel-shaped opening.

The magic happens inside MaxMSP, a powerful visual programming software by Cycling74. Max allows you to turn any data, sound, movement, even weather patterns, into interactive audio-visual experiences. The learning curve is steep, but the possibilities are endless.

This project grew from my Movement to MIDI work with Lou, exploring music and Alzheimer’s. Evolving from presence detection to audio-to-MIDI conversion, I shifted the focus to voice, stripping away the camera input.

When considering a proposal for Wells Art Contemporary, the idea of placing this work in a sacred space like Wells Cathedral made me reflect on the power of spoken words—how they shape meaning, express love, divide, unite, and even transcend language.

But at its core, this piece is about play. A universal, borderless language where your voice creates music. The final piece should sound like this—at least, that’s the theory.
