Animation

Who Sees….1:29 min.
Short experimental animation about the creative vision and the deeper, guiding principles that shape and inspire it.
The animation was shortlisted for the 7th John Ruskin Prize, 2025.
2
Stranger Than Fiction, 3:22 min.
In 2024, two years after completing the animation, I decided it was time to give it a voice. Initially created as a silent animation to reflect the quiet, contemplative atmosphere of libraries, the piece imagined the Morrab Library as a living, breathing entity—quirky, vibrant, and full of its own idiosyncrasies.

Currently work-in-progress, adding sound to the previous silent version.
Death of the Author, 2:54 min.
Animation, stop-frame and hand-drawn images, currently. The animation is about my mother’s journey with dementia, her memory loss, and gradual mental decline. Her world became increasingly surreal, sometimes confusing and frightening, other times filled with humorous stories. Coming from a family of filmmakers, Frieda taught me how to find meaning even when her world didn’t make sense. (2009/2024)

The Journey, 0:51 min.
The animation (work in progress) blends hand-drawn and stop-frame images. In 2023, I travelled to Iona and recorded the journey, incorporating those recordings into the work. The sound design is created using Max MSP, along with samples sourced from freesound.org.

In 2024, I was commissioned to create a series of short animations for social media to promote the Patricia Eschen Prize for Poetry for both adults and children.
The event was supported by The Morrab Library and The Dennis Myner Trust. The prize winners were announced in late October 2024.
In total, I created nine animations, using the event poster illustrated by Harriet-Jade Harrow as a starting point.
6
Feed The Mind, 0:30min.
Short animation experiment with images around Penzance and West Penwith on the theme of creativity. Sound: Drum Battle by Buddy Rich and Gene Kupra, 1956, Polydor Inc, NY
7
Return, 4:29min.
(no sound)
Return was shown shown as part of the ‘Drawing Down The Feminine’ group show at the Newlyn Gallery, The Plough Arts Centre, and Bridport Arts Centre.
I wanted to give my special thanks to http://www.beachfrontbroll.com for the use of a short footage of a deer. It’s a beautiful little video and together with a poem by Rilke inspired the animation. (2016)

The Eye – or the Tao of Physics
2017, 2:15 min (no sound)
This animation was inspired by ‘The Tao of Physics’ by Fritzjof Capra. It is a video animation and assemblage made from the Compact Edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (part 1&2), a magnifying glass and a small two inch monitor. You can read more about the ideas behind the work by following the link to my blog.
‘It’s a participatory universe’ (J A Wheeler) – certainly when it comes to the world of the really small where the universe and the observer exist as a pair in a timeless creative embrace.
Interactive Digital Media

1
Birdsong – Transference is an interactive digital object that transforms your voice into
birdsong when you speak
into the cone.”
The work was made during the artist residency at
The Morrab Library.
2
They Must Have Descended Into The Darkness For A Reason is an interactive sound installation exhibited at Tremenheere Gallery in 2020.
3
Let It Rip is an interactive sound and video installation inspired by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham and her late-1990s screen print series, Lemon and Oranges Playing Games.
Activated by clapping or vocal sounds, the piece generates ever-changing visual projections with every interaction.
Visit my blog to read more about the work.
4
Musical Stones is an interactive digital instrument, using stones from Newlyn Harbour. Through the melodic interaction, the stones are given a voice. A magical element sparks curiosity—how does it work? The Bare Conductive Touch Board, an Arduino-based development board, serves as an interface, bridging the physical and digital worlds to bring the stones to life.
5
When Trees Were Birds is an 8-channel interactive sound installation using a digital interface and Ableton Live to generate 60 bird song snippets. When the electrodes are touched, bird songs play back in a random sequence.
6
The Day You Entered My Story is an interactive digital installation where the viewer becomes part of the projection onto a book. Using a digital camera and Max/MSP, the installation dynamically integrates the audience into the narrative.
