Context

I’ve always been drawn to science and philosophy that go beyond the limits of deductive reasoning. As we grapple with the nature of reality, I feel that the dominant Western focus on logic, analysis, and separation has lost touch with its counterparts—intuition and feeling.

1

Some scientists encourage us to learn from non-Western philosophies, which view nature as alive and interconnected. I deeply resonate with the idea that all natural systems—geographic features, plants, rocks, water—possess a kind of soul, consciousness, or inner life.

2

Through my work, which blends  drawing, artist books, experimental animation, and interactive digital media, I explore humanity’s innate tendency toward animism—the sense that the world around us is alive and communicating with us.

3

James Hillman, the founder of archetypal psychology, profoundly influences my practice. He believed that animism isn’t about projecting human emotions onto inanimate things but recognising that the world itself communicates its own ideas and demands. This perspective sits at the core of my work.

4

“…animism is not a projection of human feelings onto inanimate matter, but that things of the world project upon us their own ideas and demands, that indeed any phenomenon has the capacity to come alive and to deeply inform us through our interaction with it, as long as we are free of an overly objectifying attitude.” (JH)

5

My work explores the idea that everything is animated by an internal force, carrying its own ideas, desires, while simultaneously being able to observe its own actions. At the heart of my practice is an exploration of ‘the other’—the concept of otherness—as a mediator between the conscious and unconscious. I seek to learn and understand by engaging with the creative energy that brings forms to life.
